In-Baskets

Select International's In-Basket assessment test is a "high-fidelity" simulation in which a candidate assumes the role of a manager at a fictitious company. They are provided with material and information typically found in a manager's email in-box and asked to respond to this information as he/she sees fit. This activity enables hiring managers to get a more accurate evaluation of a candidate's performance and capabilities.

Select International's In-Basket simulation is one of the most powerful tools available for evaluating candidates for supervisor, manager, director, or senior executive roles. The In-Baskets can be customized to manufacturing, call center, sales, or service environments.

Select International's In-Basket assessment test provides an effective simulation of "a day in the life" of a manager by mocking up professional scenarios in real time:

  • Participants' duty is to respond to the emails in the order of highest priority and in the exact same manner they would if they were performing the job
  • Participants are provided with all the background information about the company and their role before the assessment begins
  • They are also given supporting documents to help them make decisions and create their responses

In addition to responding to emails, each candidate will participate in two role plays. The candidate receives two emails at the beginning of the simulation describing the meetings they will have with another "employee". During the role play, an assessor will assume the role of the other employee and interact with the candidate.

In addition to measuring leadership ability and style, other competencies measured by the In-Basket are:

  • Decision making style
  • Empowering others
  • Interpreting information
  • Managing resources
  • Working with others
  • Written communication

Advantages

The In-Basket assessment test is:

  • Face valid and seen as fair by the candidate.
  • An accurate evaluation of how a candidate will handle realistic situations.
  • Interactive and engaging, not like taking a traditional test.
  • An unstructured format, allowing a candidate to respond any way they want.
  • Administered and scored remotely.
  • Difficult for the candidate to fake.
