Developing & Engaging Leaders

develop_engage_leaders.jpgDeveloping and engaging leaders is one of the most important initiatives that companies have and is also one of the most difficult. American Greetings has placed a great deal of emphasis on ensuring that they select, develop, and engage their leaders. Most organizations see their leaders as the key to staying competitive in a global economy and want to select and develop leaders better than others. On Thursday November 17th, Select International is going to facilitate a live discussion with American Greetings about their leadership development journey. More specifically we are going to focus on a few key topics, including the following:

Engaging the executive team as a key to success

Talent work is done best when supported from the top – CEO, President, and CHRO. In the absence of this support, it is challenging to get alignment and momentum.

Changing the conversation about millennials

We acknowledge that millennials will be the largest number of associates in the workforce, and their wants and ways of working are very different. This puts pressure on organizations to become more flexible, have career paths, rotation programs, etc.

Competency modeling and keeping things simple

Ensuring you start with the end in mind is very important. More specifically, starting with the development of a robust competency model is essential to drive other programs. However, at the same time, you don’t want to make things so complex that it doesn’t get used appropriately.

Use of assessments to uncover individual strengths/weaknesses

We believe that using assessments to more fully understand our population would enable development. We would like to use assessments aligned with the AG Leadership ID to find associates with skills like visioning, strategic thinking, adaptability, resilience, and great communication who are more likely to excel in a VUCA environment.

Training approach where sometimes less is more (70/20/10)

We need to start embracing technology if we haven’t already. Just-in-time training, resources available at any time, and blended learning approaches are the wave of the future. Also, ensuring that leaders have the time to both develop and innovate will be essential moving forward.

Renita Jefferson (Director of Talent Acquisition, Leadership Development and Diversity & Inclusion) and Lisa Villao (Director of Talent Development) from American Greetings have spent the last 20 years working to more effectively hire, develop, and engage their leaders. During this webinar Renita and Lisa will discuss the American Greetings leadership journey, the obstacles they have faced, and the solutions they use.
