The 10 Most Popular Human Resources Articles of 2016

We decided that it would be a good time to do some research and find the most popular Human Resource related articles of 2016. Our rankings are based off of the articles that received the most social media shares in 2016. Some of these articles are focused directly on HR, others are leadership focused, and others are about company culture.

Let’s kick this off starting with number 10 and heading to number 1. After all, who doesn’t love a good countdown?

10) HR Can’t Change Company Culture by Itself

This is a more recent article, but it shot up the ranks quickly. HR professionals always talk about company culture, improving company culture, changing company culture, etc. But the truth of the matter is that HR can’t make this change happen on their own. It takes the entire organization, working alongside HR, to make it happen.

9) Boss Wants Friendly, Relaxed Company Culture In Place By Friday

I’ll admit, this one is just for fun. It comes from the news satire website, The Onion. Either way, it has still earned 23,000 social media shares. It’s a short read, so have a quick laugh.

8) Why the Best Leaders Want Their Superstar Employees to Leave

This article takes a bit of an unconventional view. Most of the time, we’re doing everything we can to develop leaders and keep them, but the argument made here is that as top performers leave your company, you’re going to have a quicker flow of new talent to fill their shoes. Essentially, you’re better off having top performers for a short amount of time than having average performers forever.

7) Ten Obnoxious Company Rules To Kill In 2017

It’s always a good time to review the rules that control your employees and your company. It’s probably been a while since you’ve done that. Liz Ryan, CEO of Human Workplace, gives a great list of 10 rules that might still be on the books in your company that you might want to consider getting rid of.

6) Leaders Can Shape Company Culture Through Their Behaviors

There are plenty of great quotes in this article, but one in particular stands out: “Culture is learned behavior — it’s not a by-product of operations. It’s not an overlay. We create our organizational culture by the actions we take; not the other way around.”

5) How One Fast-Food Chain Keeps Its Turnover Rates Absurdly Low

Ah, turnover. It’s always a hot topic in HR. This article really caught on with HR professionals because it outlines how a fast food restaurant keeps their turnover absurdly low. I’ll repeat that – a fast food restaurant (an industry that usually has very high turnover) keeps their turnover very low. Don’t skip over this one.

4) How Did Walmart Get Cleaner Stores and Higher Sales? It Paid Its People More

Walmart sometimes gets a bad rap for having low wages for its employees. But, in 2015 they decided to start paying their employees more. Not only was that great for the employees, it also turned out to be great for the company itself.

3) A Human Resources Career is Not for “Nice” People

This headline probably caught your attention – it is a good one. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Hey! I work in HR and I’m nice. What is this BS?” Give it a read, though. Brian Walker, an HR executive, makes a good argument that to work in HR you actually want to be empathetic, fair, and good at balancing, rather than be a “nice” person.

2) When we tell people to do their jobs, we get workers. When we trust people to get the job done, we get leaders

This one is a short read from Simon Sinek, one of my favorite leadership experts. Even though it is short, it’s still impactful. This article gained 74,000 social media shares. The title itself sums this one up quite well.

1) 9 Things That Make Good Employees Quit

Finally, the top shared article of 2016. This is a great look at the things that make employees quit your company. You may not have even considered a few of these things so give it a read. Is your company guilty of committing any of these acts?
