ThinkstockPhotos-188097119The Affordable Care Act has survived its second Supreme Court challenge and it looks like it’s here to stay. So what does healthcare reform mean for talent acquisition professionals? Actually, even if the Supreme Court had ruled against the ACA, or if conservatives in Congress were somehow successful in repealing it, many of the changes that constitute “healthcare reform” as we know it, would not be affected. Many of the changes to how our facilities function, and how care is provided, and paid for, were already underway before the ACA and would continue without it.

Six Things to Consider Before Writing Off Behavioral Assessments

It just doesn’t make sense to you that a series of questions about what you believe, or how much you agree with seemingly unrelated statements, could predict whether a candidate will be good at a particular job. There are plenty of (mostly uninformed) articles out there questioning the value of behavioral tests in employment situations. A recent Wall Street Journal article proposes that they are discriminatory. A Forbes article slams the use of the Meyers-Briggs.

1. Psychology is a science

It’s not unreasonable to question their role in selection. But this is where the science of psychology comes in. I might question how laying in a tube that makes a bunch of noise can tell my doctor whether I have a problem with my upper intestine – but then they explain the science of a CT scan to me, and what they are looking for, and their track record of diagnosing these problems with this methodology, and I’m willing to lay there for a while.

In an interesting twist in healthcare hiring, we now have physicians seeking advice on how to “select” their employer.  They realize that the financial success and the personal satisfaction of their career will depend, to a large extent, on choosing the right situation.  They come out of residency poorly prepared to evaluate potential practice settings, be they with a group or a hospital.  Not surprisingly, a few years into their career, they often discover that it is not what they were looking for and they are back to square one.  This is not the sort of career uncertainty they envisioned when they entered the medical profession.
