There are several decisions to make before hitting your first drive on the golf course: what obstacles are in your way, how far is the hole, what are your competitors doing, what are the environmental conditions (wind, elevation, etc.)? When it comes to choosing an assessment to use for employee selection, there are just as many decisions to make; however, you are likely much more familiar with your 3-iron than you are with The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing or The Principles for the Validation and Use of Personnel Selection Procedures. As an employer, it can be overwhelming to consider all of the options: type of test, administration format, accuracy, and legal considerations, to name a few.

In order to find the best test for your company, you not only need to be able to ask the right questions, but you need to know what the acceptable answers are. In this one hour Webinar, Select International consultant Lance Andrews will cover four questions you should ask when choosing a pre-employment test, and give you a “cheat sheet” for determining the acceptability of the answers you receive. Using an easy to understand case study of PGA Tour Golf Tournaments as an example, industry terms such as Constructs, Criterion-Related Validity, Content Validity, Validity Coefficients will be practically explained.

What You Will Learn:

  • What does a test measure? All tests are designed to measure specific characteristics known as constructs. Learn what you can realistically expect from a test and when to be skeptical about what a test purports to measure. Example: Golf course construction as an analog to test construction.
  • How was the test developed? Knowing the methodology behind the test development, and the qualifications of the test developers can give you tremendous insight into the test’s credibility. Example: Did the golf course designer plan out the course to measure all aspects of golfer ability (distance play, short play, putting, hazard play, etc.)? Did the course builders follow through on the designer’s vision (i.e., does it actually ‘test’ putting skill)?
  • Is the test reliable and valid? Know how to interpret the common statistics given in test technical reports. Example: Validity of Golf Tournaments as an analogy to the Validity of Tests.
  • How do I interpret the tests? It is important to know how the test publisher provides results and what decision criteria are suggested, norms given for comparison, etc. Example: The tournament field and its effect on validity. Not all tournaments have players of equal ability (some tournaments are invitationals and restrict the field to the top tiered players while other less prestigious tournaments have lower tiered players). Tournament field is discussed as an analog to test norms.

Following the presentation, you will have an opportunity to get answers to your specific questions during the interactive Q&A.

Which Golf Tournaments are the Best Tests of Player Ability?
This paper examines the concept of golf tournament validity. Applying psychometric testing theory to golf tournaments, it examines the tournament results from the entire 2004 PGA season. The study also measured the difficulty and discrimination of the tournaments, and explored the interaction between validity, difficulty, and discrimination.
