A 3 Step Process to Approaching Physician Success

Posted by  Bryan Warren

Perhaps nothing has been so ignored in the push for healthcare reform, as the need to prepare and position physicians to succeed – to succeed in their careers in the face of great changes – and to succeed as leaders and partners in changing the way care is delivered. Successful reformation of the American healthcare system, with an emphasis on value-driven care, assumes a new level of collaboration between physicians and hospitals, and a new set of physician behavioral skills, including adaptability, innovation, collaboration, business acumen, leadership and emotional intelligence.describe the image

Are physicians prepared to succeed? Are we doing enough to prepare them? An example: In a recent HealthLeaders Media Intelligence Report, Patient Experience Transformation: Engaged Patients, Measurable Standards, August, 2014, hospital senior leaders were asked, “Which component of the HCAHPS measures does your organization have the most difficulty?” The most frequent response? “Doctors communicate well.” But what are we doing about it? How are we preparing and incentivizing physicians to be better communicators? Uncertainty, declining compensation, and increasing administrative burdens are all contributing to declining physician career satisfaction. Again – what are we doing about it?

We’ve been working with our clients on a relatively simple three step process:

  1. Define expectations – productivity, responsibilities, and behavioral competencies – for instance, “what does leadership mean and what do we expect?”
  2. Evaluate potential and performance in a deliberate manner.
  3. Give physicians the tools and skills to meet the defined expectations.

We’ll be discussing these, and other issues, in an upcoming webinar, New Physician Expectations - Ensuring Career Satisfaction and Organizational Success, A Panel Discussion on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, with Becker’s Hospital Review.

Our expert panel represents various points of view: CMO, CEO, Physician, and Hospital Board Member. They will discuss the changing dynamic as more physicians become employees, the new expectation that physicians be more than just good clinicians, the need for new type of physician leader and a more deliberate approach to physician success. We’ll focus on:

  • Understanding the factors driving the changing role of physicians.
  • Examining the behavioral competencies that impact physician performance and their ability to contribute to organizational success; and
  • A more deliberate approach to understanding and improving physician performance
