Recent Study Shows That Assessment Can Accurately Predict Future Workers' Comp Claims

- Select International research finds that a pre-employment assessment accurately predicted both disciplinary actions and workers' compensation claims -

Pittsburgh, April 20, 2017 – A recent longitudinal study conducted by Select International demonstrated an assessment’s ability to predict and reduce workers’ compensation claims.  The study, which looks at the effectiveness of a pre-employment assessment (SecureFit®), was published in the prestigious Journal of Safety Research, a joint publication of the National Safety Council (NSC) and Elsevier.

The study’s sample was taken from a large automobile manufacturer that implemented a comprehensive hiring process which included SecureFit, a web-based assessment that measures important safety-related traits, such as conscientiousness, locus of control, and risk taking.  The assessment was not used for selection, and the results were not shared with the organization, making this a truly predictive study.

Company-recorded disciplinary actions and workers’ compensation claims were collected and compared to the assessment results, 12 months after employees were hired.  The results showed that if SecureFit had been used, and just those individuals identified as “poor fits” had been screened out, disciplinary actions would have been 39% lower, and workers’ compensation claims would have been 52% lower.  The article demonstrates the effectiveness of SecureFit in predicting disciplinary actions and workers’ compensation claims 12 months into the future.

“Organizations that use the SecureFit assessment to screen out high risk candidates can significantly reduce costs and lost productivity associated with recordable injuries,” suggested Dr. Matthew O’Connell, Select International co-founder and article co-author.  “According to estimates from OSHA, the dollar figures saved by hiring safer individuals amount to tens of thousands of dollars per each incident prevented, not to mention the significant human cost associated with injuries.”
